15th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Northwest) FLAG

15th Arkansas Regiment

The parents of James William Millikin.

James William Millikin, called "Jim", was born in Tennessee in September 1828. He came to Pope County, Arkansas as a young man and married there between 1850 and 1853 Frances "Jane" Davidson, who was born about 1839 in Mississippi. In 1860, they lived in Independence, Pope County, Arkansas with three children. Although he owned no slaves, James William joined the 15th Northwest Arkansas Infantry in 1862 to fight for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Elk Horn (Pea Ridge) and traded within two days, according to military records. He was also among the 30,000 Confederates who ultimately surrendered at Vicksburg, Mississippi (See Civil War records). Between 1865 to 1868, they lived in Missouri for a short time, as two of their children were born in Missouri in these years, but they shortly were back in Arkansas. By 1870, in North Fork, Pope County, they had five children at home. They are listed in Yell County, Arkansas in 1880 with seven children at home. His wife Frances "Jane" died before the 1900 census and James W. Millikin was a widower in the home of his son Elias Nathaniel on the 1900 census. He passed away before the next census.

The children and grandchildren of James William and Frances Jane Millikin:

1. John W. Milliken was born about 1854 in Pope County, Arkansas. John probably died young, as he was not listed with the family in 1870.

1. Rebecca Jane Milliken was born 30 January 1858 in Pope County, Arkansas. She grew up there and married Aaron O. Prince there in May of 1877. He was born in 1854 in Pope County, the son of Mark and Catherine Brewton Prince. In 1880, Aaron and Rebecca "Prints" were in Pope County with a baby son, John. Aaron must have died before 1900. In that census, Rebecca is listed as Rebecca Nowlin, head of household. Her three sons John, Mark and James are listed as Nowlins also, but this is a mistake. A niece, Minnie Milliken is living in her home, and next door is John W. Milliken, Rebecca's uncle. There is also another Rebecca Nowlin listed on this census, in Lee, Pope County. She is married to W. L. Nowland. Among the six children listed in their home are John, Mark, and James. It is possible that Rebecca was enumerated twice. In 1910, "Jannie B. Nowlin", a widow of 52, lived with her son Mark Andrew Prince in Convenience, Pope County, Arkansas. Rebecca died on 10 December 1910, probably in Pope County. She is buried at the Atkins City Cemetery in Pope County. According to the census, she had nine children and three living in 1900. Her three known children:

2. John T. Prince was born in August 1879 in Pope County. He died 18 March 1904 and is buried at Brock Cemetery, Victor, Pope County, Arkansas.
2. Mark Andrew Prince was born 10 January 1885 in Hector, Pope County, Arkansas. He married Ella L. Burkhead in about 1907 in Arkansas. She was born 24 July 1888 in Arkansas. In 1910 they lived at Convenience in Pope County with three small children, his brother James, Minnie Milliken, a cousin, and his mother "Jannie" (Rebecca Jane) Nowlin, a widow. Next door is Thomas B. Nowlin, a step brother. In 1918, Mark filled out a draft card listing his birth and next of kin, Mrs. Ella Prince, wife. By 1920, Mark and Ella still lived in Pope County and had seven children in the home. Listed in Lee, Pope County, by 1930, they had eight children at home. Mark died 15 December 1932 in Pope County and is buried at Atkins City Cemetery in Pope County near his mother. Ella passed away in Pope County 19 August 1942 and is laid to rest beside him. The children of Mark and Ella Prince: Arley Lee who married Dorothy M. Karnes, Taft George, Frances G., Roy D., Lillie M., Mamie, Lou Madie who married Iris L. Boggs, Callie J., Eugene, and Melvin. Many of these children lived in California.
2. James F. Prince was born 15 Jan 1888 in Pope County. He married Katie M. Scribner about 1916. She was born in Arkansas on 18 April 1893. When he filled out his draft card in 1918 in Pope County, James was the father of a child and worked for M. P. Hanks on a farm. In 1920, the family lived in Moreland, Pope County with two young daughters. James and Katie moved to California and she died there in April 1964. James died 3 April 1969 in Merced County, California. Their three known children are Laverne, Agnes, and Aaron Ervin Prince.

1. Andrew W. "Andy" Milliken was born 8 August 1858 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married on 12 June 1884 to Josephine C. "Jessie" Younger. She was born December, 1859 in Arkansas. They would raise a family of nine children. In 1900 they lived at Convenience in Pope County with seven children. In 1910, they lived at Lee, Pope County and listed six of nine children alive. Soon after, Andrew and Josephine moved to McKey, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, where they are listed in 1920. Andy died on 18 August 1927 in Sequoyah County and was interred at Drakestand Cemetery in Sallisaw, Sequoyah County. In 1930, Jessie Milliken lived with her son George in Sequoyah County. We do not know a death date for her. Their children:

2. George Washington Milliken was born 3 May 1885 in Pope County, Arkansas. Before 1916 he married Fannie R. Nichols, who was born 21 May 1895 in Arkansas. George and Fannie had five daughters, all born in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, where they lived in McKey, very near his parents. In 1930, his mother Jessie Younger Milliken lived with his family, as she was a widow. George died 24 March 1954 in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. Fannie lived many years more and died on 2 January 1988 in Sequoyah County. Their five daughters were: Gertrude M., Perdita (Perlita?), Evelyn, Vita Mae who died as a child in 1923, and Orletta, who married Glen Elwood South.

He was born 25 November 1886 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. In 1920 they lived at McKey with two children. In 1930, they lived at Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma and had four children at home. Fred died 18 January 1953 in Los Angeles County, California. We do not have a death date for Frances Milliken. The four children are: Noel B., Neva Joan, who married Neil L. Byram, Silvia, and Donald Reginald.
2. Catherine "Cassie" Milliken was born in March 1887 in Pope County, Arkansas, a twin to Frances Jennie. She married about 1910 to John A. Anthony, who was born 25 July 1889 in Pope County, Arkansas. They were in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma for the 1920 census and were listed next door to her twin sister's family, the Grinsteads, and they had twin children, a girl and a boy. By 1930 they had moved back to Pope County, Arkansas and had their twins in the home. The children were: Hawley L. Anthony and Aga L. Anthony, born 11 June 1911 in Arkansas.
2. Mary M. Milliken was born in March 1889 in Arkansas. She was listed on the 1900 census but we have nothing further on her. Through counting the deceased children reported on the 1910 census, we find that Mary was deceased between 1900-1910.
2. John H. Milliken was born 4 may 1892 in Arkansas. On his draft registration card in 1918, he said he was born in Russellville and lived in Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma at the time, married. On the 1920 census, we find a John "Millteon"? age 27, born Arkansas, with wife Mary, age 24, born in Arkansas.
2. Bebick E. Milliken, a daughter, was born in May 1894 in Arkansas. She was deceased by 1910.
'2. Dora B. 'Milliken was born 3 November 1896. She married William Clarence Nichols in 1918 in Oklahoma. He was born 25 February 1899 in Oklahoma. Although not yet found on censuses, records show that they lived in California. They had one known son, Billy Ray Nichols, who was born in 1925 and died in 2004 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. Dora B. Milliken died 20 December 1972 in Bakersfield and William Nichols died 6 June 1980 in same. Their son is buried at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Kern County, but we have no record for their grave location.

In 1930 they were listed on the Sequoyah County, Oklahoma census with three children. According to a son's obituary, the family moved to California in 1943. Winnie Adams Milliken died 5 Mar 1984 in Kern County, California. Albert died 7 June 1995, in same. Their three children were Jewel J., Harrel L., and Charley B., who was born in 1928 and died in 2006 in Kern County, California.

1. Mary L. Milliken, born about 1864 in Arkansas, is reported to have married a Thomas A. Tinney after 1800. No record is found for them yet.

'1. Malinda' Milliken was born 28 September 1866 in Missouri. In 1882, probably in Pope County, Arkansas, she married Eliga M. Yates. They probably married in Pope County, as both families lived there. His name is given as Elijah on censuses, but on his gravestone is Eliga. By 1900, Eliga and Malinda were living in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, with eight children who were all born in Arkansas, including the baby, who was six months old. In 1910, they are listed with their ten children in Waldron, Grady County, Oklahoma. By 1920, listed as "Linda Yates", Melinda is listed as divorced and has three of her children in her home in Lindsay, Garvin County, Oklahoma. We cannot find her on the 1930 census yet. She died on 22 July 1938 in Oklahoma. She is buried at the Bradley Cemetery in Grady County, Oklahoma and she is on a double stone with Eliga Yates. Three of her children married Akins, the relationship of these Akins is not clear. Three of her children married Hedges.

2. Mary Levina/Levisa Yates was born 9 January 1884 in Arkansas. She married Rawleigh Akin in 1902 in Indian Territory. He was born 18 December 1881 in Tennessee. In 1910 they lived in Mosley, Murray County, Oklahoma with three children. In 1920 they were in Harris, Johnston County, Oklahoma with a family of four. Mary died 23 May 1962 in Oklahoma City, and Rawleigh died there in January 1967. Their children were Maud or Mandy, Andy, a boy with unreadable name (C****l?), a son named J. D., and Mildred.
2. Hattie Mae Yates was born May 1886 in Arkansas. She married John B. Akin in 1904 in Indian Territory. We do not know if he and Rawleigh Akin were brothers or some other relation, but it is probable. His parents were William Brown Akin, a native of Green County, Kentucky, just next to Adair County, and his wife Mary McFarland. John was born 29 July 1880 in Tennessee. He and Hattie and their two children were in Mosley, Murray County, Oklahoma in 1910, living next to her sister Mary, who had married Rawleigh Akin. In 1918 John filed his draft registration card in Creek County, Oklahoma, where he worked as a teamster. By 1920, they were living in Lindsay, Garvin County, Oklahoma with two teenage daughters. Next door was Hattie's mother, "Linda Yates" and her brother Andrew. In the 1930 census, they were listed in Chandler, Grady County, Oklahoma. 2. John Andrew "Dude" Yates was born 2 September 1888 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. Between 1910 and 1913, he married Mary Etta Akin, the daughter of Henry Thomas Akin and an unknown spouse. 2. James Elijah Yates was born 27 September 1890 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. He lived with his parents in 1910 and in 1918, when he registered for the draft in Grady County and said that he was single but supported his mother and father. He died in 1957, as is on his gravestone at Bradley Cemetery in Grady County.
2. Rebekah Bessie Jane Yates was born 9 December 1892 in Arkansas. She lived with her parents through the 1910 census but is not found after.
2. Jessie Novella Yates was born in February 1896 in Arkansas. She married H. H. Adkins (could this be Akin/Akins as well?) before 1920 in Oklahoma. He was born about 1895 in Texas. On the 1920 census, they were living in her mother's home. Mr. Adkins either died or they parted, for in 1922 Jessie married Lawrence Argyle Hedges. He was born 2 March 1899 in Indian Territory, the son of Sherman Jackson and Theodocia Belle Holder Hedges. In 1930 they are in Naples, Grady County, Oklahoma, listed next door to her brother Elgin, below. No death dates are known for the couple. Their four known children are Leford, Leon, Cecil, and Lucille.
2. Victor B. Yates was born in November 1899 in Arkansas. He last appeared on the 1910 census; no further information is known yet.
2. Esther Lee Yates was born 20 May 1902 in Grady County, Oklahoma. On 7 January 1918 in Oklahoma, she married Frank Hedges, the son of Sherman and Theodocia Hedges. Frank was born 14 December 1896 in Dennison, Grayson County, Texas. In 1920 Frank and Esther lived in Bradley, Grady County, Oklahoma, same household as his mother and stepfather, Mr. McCune. They had a baby son. In 1930, they were in Chickasaw, Grady County, where Frank was a tinner in a shop. Frank died in June, 1965 in Oklahoma, but we have no date of death for Esther. Their son was Raford R. Hedges.
2. Emory Martin Yates was born 9 September 1905 in Oklahoma. He died in November 1974 and is buried at Bradley Cemetery in Grady County, Oklahoma.

1. A. Samantha Milliken was born about 1868 in Missouri. We have seen a report that she married a W. L. Torrigan in Pope County, Arkansas in 1886. The bride's name on this record is "Martha S. Millikin, born 1869" and this certainly could be our Samantha but as yet we have no proof, and we cannot find them on a census.

Elias Nathaniel and Maggie Millikin

Elias Nathaniel and Maggie Millikin on wedding day

1. Elias Nathaniel Millikin was born in April 1872 in Arkansas. He more formally went by the name of Nathaniel, as he is listed as such on several records. His grandson, James William "Bill" Millikin, said E.N.'s nickname was "Bee" or "B". On 21 May 1893 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas he wed Maggie Cordelia Saylors. She was born 25 February 1877 in Arkansas, the daughter of William J. Saylors and Martha "Mattie" Jane Downs. By 1900, Nathaniel and Maggie had two children and lived in Center, Pope County, where Nathaniel worked at the saw mill. His widowed father, James William, lived with them at that time. In 1910, they were located in McKey, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma with five children, and they remained there through the 1920 census. At that time, seven of their nine children were at home, including their recently widowed eldest son, James William.  Elias Nathaniel or "B" died 28 December 1928 in Rogers County and was laid to rest initially near Verdigris, Oklahoma but was later moved to Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma by his widow, Maggie.  In the 1930 census, Maggie still lived in Verdigris, Rogers County, Oklahoma with four of her children at home. On this census, it is interesting that Maggie reported that her mother was (half) Cherokee and her father was "Mixed", the only census that did so. Maggie told her grandson, Bill, she was proud of her Cherokee ancestry. It is assumed that her husband wouldn't allow her to report her Native American ancestry when he was alive because of negative social connotations.  It is likely she did so after "B" died in an attempt to qualify for government subsidies awarded to members of the Cherokee tribe. Maggie moved to Hays, Kansas where two of her daughters married.  Eventually Maggie Saylors Millikin moved back to Claremore, Oklahoma where she lived next door to her oldest son until her death on 27 August 1959.  She was buried next to Elias Nathaniel "B" at Woodlawn Cemetery.

2. James William Robert Edmond Lee Alva Millikin was born on 17 August 1894 in Arkansas. He was married twice, first to Lula Corley. She was born 9 December 1898 in Indian Territory and married James on Christmas Eve of 1914 in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. The young couple suffered terrible misfortune, though, for their first child, Leland, born 15 January 1917 in Sequoyah County died of Spanish Flu on 7 December 1919 there. Lula herself died of Spanish Flu during childbirth on 1 January 1919, two weeks after the death of Leland. The unnamed infant son died as well. All three of them are buried at Drakestand Cemetery in Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. In two weeks, James had lost his entire family, and on the 1920 census he is listed in his parents' home in McKey, Sequoyah County. In 1924, he met and married Elva Adaline Brown, the daughter of John and Phoebe (Wilson) Brown, natives of Indiana, and the school teacher in Sallisaw. She was born 24 August 1898 in Washington County, Arkansas and earned her teaching certificate from the Normal School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma (now Northeastern State University). The 1930 census shows James and Elva living in Verdigris, Rogers County, Oklahoma with three young children. Elva died 6 September 1954 in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma from complications due to tuberculosis. James passed away there on 23 December 1972. They were both buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rogers County, Oklahoma. Their three children are Edmond Leon, James William "Bill", and Maggie Dorla Dean Millikin.

2. Harvey Theodore Milliken was born 25 February 1904 in Indian Territory. He married Edith Dixon. Edith was born 15 December 1910 in Conway, Laclede County, Missouri. Harvey died 9 November 1963 in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma; he was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rogers County, Oklahoma. Edith died 26 Mar 2009 in Claremore and she was buried at Woodlawn with Harvey Milliken. They had at least three children.
2. Sherman Andrew Milliken, born 4 November 1907 in Indian Territory, married Marie Pearl Arrowood in 1928. Marie was the sister of Imogene, who married Sherman's brother Floyd. The Arrowood family were Cherokee Indian. She was born 17 Septenber 1908 in Oklahoma, the daughter of James Andrew Arrowood and wife Mertie Josephine Tackett. Sherman and Marie are listed on the 1930 census in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma, on which Marie is reported as part Cherokee Indian. He died 27 April 1981 in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rogers County. Marie was born 17 September 1908 in Oklahoma and died 15 April 1995 in the same.
