James L. Hurst was born in Bedford County, Tennessee about the year 1826. He lived in his widowed mother's home in 1850 and in 1860, when he was 33 years old and single. He does not appear on the 1870 with his mother and brother. Did he die in the Civil War? No records have been found for him in 1870. There is a match on the 1880 census in Pope County, Arkansas, but we cannot be completely certain that this is the same person. Living in Illinois township, Pope County, are James Hurst, age 54, born in Tennessee and parents born in Virginia and Tennessee; his wife Anny, age 22, born in Pennsylvania with Pennsylvania born parents; and two sons, Clarence and George, aged three and one month. Clarence was born in Illinois and George in Arkansas. Our James Hurst did have relatives who moved to Illinois from Tennessee about 1850, and Pope County, Arkansas is a favorite settling place for almost every line of Beard families. Chances are good that this family is the right one, but further information would be most welcome.
