The parents of James Mitchell Beard

James Mitchell Beard was born in 1822 in Bedford County, Tennessee. When he was a young adolescent, he moved with his big extended family to Panola County, Mississippi. There, in the 1845 Mississippi State Census, J. M. Beard was listed by himself in his own home. This shows that he had property of his own as a young man, no doubt given to him by his father, who died soon after that state census was taken. About the year 1849 in Panola County, James married Mary Frances Mayfield, who was called "Charity". She was born on 11 December 1830 in Tennessee, the daughter of Thomas Mayfield, who was born in Kentucky in 1807, and his wife Elizabeth Hobbs, who were married in Barren County, Kentucky on 17 February 1830 and were residents of Panola County by 1845, listed on the state census there. In 1850, James and Charity Beard lived in Panola County almost next door to his mother--or perhaps stepmother--Mary Beard. They had a six month old son named Hugh for his paternal grandfather. James and Charity's second child, James Mitchell Beard, is said to have been born in Union Parish, Louisiana, so they must have moved there by 17 March 1852. James Mitchell Beard then disappears from history between June 1851 and the year 1859. He probably died in Louisiana. Mary Frances Beard remarried by 1859 to Hugh George Bird

Mary Frances Burd

Mary Frances Mayfield Beard Burd

(sometimes Burd), who was born about 1832 in Alabama. He was the son of Elihu Bird, who died in Union Parish in January 1844, and Nancy Mathews/Mathes who remarried to a Taylor. On the 1860 census in Union Parish, H. Bird and wife Mary are listed with her two Beard sons (mistakenly listed as Birds) and her nine month old baby, John Bird. On the same census, it is interesting that an H. Bird, same age of 28, is listed as a farmhand with another family, that of John Gray. The Grays were just a few homes away from the mother of Hugh George Bird, Nancy Bird Taylor. Could it be that Hugh Bird and Mary Frances Beard were only just married this year, and Hugh Bird was listed in his bachelor home as well as his married household? If that is so, then the baby, John, could be the son of James Mitchell Beard and we could better pinpoint the death date of James Mitchell. By 1863, the Birds had added another son, George Wesley Bird, who was born in Union Parish. Hugh George Bird served in the Civil War in the same unit as his brothers Needham and William Bird. He probably died in the War, as by 1870 Charity Bird was a widow again at age 38, listed in Union Parish with three of the four known boys that were born to her. John, who was the baby in 1860, was not listed in 1870. Her first son, Hugh Beard, was listed three days earlier as a farmhand in the home of William Moore, a neighbor, and then also in his mother's home. Before 1877, the family would pack up and leave their Louisiana home of many years and move ever West, this time to Texas, where they had friends and relatives from Mississippi who lived in Nacogdoches County. One account of the journey to Texas said that they came in wagons and only carried what they could pack into a trunk. It took a week to get to Shreveport, Louisiana, where the women boarded a train and rode to Troup, Texas. They rode on a lumber wagon from there to Sacul, Texas. They spent a wonderful night there around the campfire. The family stayed in Sacul and farmed for John Lucas. Later, they bought a home three miles south of Sacul and paid fifty cents per acre. This property is still known as Beard Hill, and it was their home for the rest of their lives. Mary Frances Mayfield Beard Bird would spend most of the rest of her very active life in the home of her eldest son, Hugh Monroe and his big family. She was like another parent to their children and she is very well remembered today for her role in holding her boys together and then helping them raise their own families. In 1910, she was living with her granddaughter Lola Beard Hudson and her husband Forest Hudson in Kaufman, Texas. She was listed as "Grandmother in Law". By 1920, she was back with Hugh in Nacogdoches County. She died on 7 June 1927 at the grand age of 96 in Tarrant County, Texas, and she was laid to rest in the McKnight Cemetery at Cushing, Nacogdoches County, Texas. The descendants of James Mitchell Beard and wife Mary Frances are:

1. Hugh Monroe Beard was born in Panola County, Mississippi 19 February 1850, and he was just a baby on the census taken that year. He was named for his paternal grandfather. His parents moved to Union Parish, Louisiana when he was very young, and Hugh grew up there. In 1870, he was listed "working out" at a nearby farm as well as in his mother's home. He married on 4 September 1871 to nineteen year old Margaret Elizabeth Barton, who was called Bettie. She was born 22 June 1852 in Union, Jackson County, Arkansas to Jessie Frank and Sarah Alice Williamson Barton. Jessie Frank Barton died about 1863 during service for the Confederates in the War Between the States. Sarah Alice, his widow, came by wagon train to Douglas, Nacogdoches County, Texas in about 1869 with her two brothers, George McFarland Williamson and Joseph N. Williamson. Their aged mother, Margaret Agnes "Peggy" Wright, was with them on this journey. They were all residents of Yalobusha and Panola Counties in Mississippi from about 1837. Margaret Wright died on 10 October 1871 and is said to be

buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas. Hugh and Bettie moved to Texas also and were listed in Liberty, Nacogdoches County by 1880. Hugh's mother lived with them and his half brother George Bird/Burd was a young teenager in Hugh's home. Hugh's brother James Mitchell Beard Jr lived nearby with his own family. In 1900, the family was listed at Looneyville, same county. Hugh and Bettie had seven of eleven children still living. Mary Frances Bird listed 2 of 5 still living, as George Bird had died in 1899. In 1910, Ida and Annie Beard, daughters of Charles Henry Beard, lived with Hugh Beard since their mother had died. Hugh and his Mother Mary Frances raised these two girls, ably assisted by Hugh’s daughters Nettie and Henrietta.  Betty Barton was not well for much of her life and was frequently confined to her bedroom where she pieced quilts to pass the time. Mary Frances was always the lady of the house." Bettie Barton passed away on 13 May 1923. In 1930, Hugh was a widower of eighty with two daughters living with him and his son Charles next door. Hugh died 22 February 1932 and was laid to rest beside Bettie at McKnight Cemetery in the Nacogdoches County where they had made a home for over fifty years. The children and grandchildren of Hugh and Bettie are:
2.  Charles Henry "Charlie" Beard was born in 1874 in Union County, Arkansas, which is just over the state line from Union County, Louisiana.  When he was a toddler, his parents moved to Nacogdoches County, Texas, which would be his home for the rest of his life.  In December 1897 Charlie married Annie Leona Cornelius, the daughter of Henry R. and Julia C. Wills Cornelius of Nacogdoches County.  Annie was born there in February 1879.  She had a younger brother, Julian, who would marry Sarah Beard, the younger sister of Charles Henry Beard.  In 1900, Charles and Julia lived in Nacogdoches County with baby daughter Ida, just two homes away from his parents.
a few months after the census, Julia gave birth to a second daughter, Annie Pearl, but then Julia died just two weeks later, in October 1900.  Both the young girls may have been raised by their paternal grandparents, as they were living in that home on the 1910 census.  In June 1904, Charles remarried to Sarah Jane "Jenny" Fletcher, the daughter of John B. and Mary Fletcher.  Sarah was born in Texas in 1888, probably in Rusk or Cherokee County.  Charlie and Jenny would have a family of eight children together and raise them in Sacul, Nacogdoches County.  He worked in a lumber mill and his parents always lived nearby.  Charles died in January 1963 in Nacogdoches County.  Jenny died the next year and they were both interred at the McKnight Cemetery there.  The children of Charles Henry Beard and first wife Annie Cornelius were:

rents were listed in Panola County, Mississippi, and on the 1900 census, his place of birth was listed as Mississippi. However, on both the 1880 and the 1910 censuses, place of birth was listed as Louisiana. At some point early in the 1850s, his parents moved to Union Parish, Louisiana, and his mother made a home there for many years after James Mitchell Beard Sr. died. On 19 October 1871, the wedding of James Mitchell Jr and Elizabeth A. Nevils was held in Union Parish, Louisiana. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Nevils and his wife Mary Ann Jones. Thomas Nevels had died in an Alton, Illinois Union prison camp in April 1863 of tuberculosis.
