John A. Beard was born in 1843 in Kentucky. When the Civil War began, John joined up with the 13th Kentucky Infantry, Company F, as a private. He was just nineteen when he died of pneumonia, according to war records. This was on 10 April 1862, just three days after the Battle of Shiloh, in which his unit was involved. It is not known if he participated in the battle, but he was buried at the beautiful Shiloh National Park Cemetery in Hardin County, Tennessee. His regiment lost 58 men in battle and 193 men to disease during the War.
