Seralda Beard

The parents of Seralda Beard.

Seralda Beard was born in Bedford County, Tennessee in about 1824. When she was about twelve years old she moved to Panola County, Mississippi with her large family. In 1843, she married Joseph M. Houston. He was born in Tennessee about 1818. It is not known if the Beard and Houston families knew each other in Tennessee, and the Houston family does not seem completely certain of his lineage. There were definitely several Houston families living in the Bedford County and Marshall County areas when our Beard ancestors were in the same places. Seralda and Joseph Houston, married for seven years, were in Panola County on the 1850 census. They lived among many relatives and friends. Before 1860, they would have ten children, but a great tragedy happened in November 1859, when Joseph died of pneumonia. Seralda Beard Houston was left a widow at the age of 36 with ten children and a Civil War looming. The children ranged in age from a baby of two months to a thirteen year old son. Seralda had to hold her family together during some unbelievably terrible times. Apparently she managed, for in the 1870 census she appeared as a mother of six children still at home. By 1880 Seralda was still the head of her household, but the family was enumerated in Tate County, Mississippi, which is next to Panola County. Her daughter Louisa with a young husband and baby lived with her. Next door was another married daughter, Barbara. Seralda's sons James and John also lived close by. Seralda died before the 1900 census was taken, and we have not found her burial place. Many of the descendants of Seralda and Joseph Houston made homes in Tate and Panola Counties in Mississippi, and some are still in the area today, over a hundred and fifty years after this couple married. The descendants of Joseph and Seralda Beard Houston:

1. Mary J. Houston was born 28 February 1847 in Panola County, Mississippi, according to a family report. We can find no records for her after she was a small child in 1850, but some report her marriage to a Jefferson Hoyle in Tate County, Mississippi on 9 October 1866. No further information has been found, and we cannot vouch for this marriage.

1. John W. Houston was born in April 1848 in Panola County, Mississippi. He was only eleven when his father died, and as the eldest son John must have shouldered family responsibilities early. He married Eliza V. or F. Anderson about the year 1869. She was born 1 February 1848 in Panola County, Mississippi, the daughter of William and Melinda Anderson of that county, who lived very close to the Beard family in Panola County. John and Eliza are not yet found in 1870. In 1880 they lived in neighboring Tate County, Mississippi with five children, and they lived two homes away from his mother, Seralda. By 1900 they still lived in Tate County, they were married thirty years, and nine of their twelve children were still living. John W. Houston died 28 September 1909. In 1910 his widow Eliza lived with her married daughter Lillie Holliman in Tate County. Ten years later, on the 1920 census Eliza was listed with her married daughter, Eula Houston Whitsell, in Tate County. In 1930, Eliza Anderson Houston was listed as 84 years old and still lived in the home of Eula Whitsell in Tate County. Eliza Anderson Houston is said to have died on 25 April 1930 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi.

2. Frances Newton "Frank" Houston was born 25 September 1870 in Mississippi. He married Lula Virginia Kimzey on 1 September 1888 in Panola County, Mississippi. She was born 14 February 1870, the daughter of Humphrey Posey Kimsey and wife Mary Annie Howard. Frances and Lula had a child born, probably their first child, who died. Their second child was born in 1892 in Tate County, Mississippi. Between 1892 and 1894, they moved to Arkansas for a few years, as their third and fourth children were born there. They were then back in Mississippi by 1898 for the birth of their fifth child in September of that year. They were all listed on the 1900 census in Panola County, Mississippi with four of five children still living. Included in their household count was William Mann, "orphan", who was born in Missouri in 1885. In 1902, their last son was born in Mississippi; their last child, a daughter, was born in Oklahoma, so they must have tried a stint in Indian lands. Lula had relatives who lived in Oklahoma at this time. It appears that Lula Kimzey Houston probably died at the birth or shortly after, for she died on 16 February 1908 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma and is buried at the Highland Cemetery in Durant. The baby girl was named for her mother, Lula. Frances Newton Houston brought the children back to Tate County, Mississippi, where he married a second time, to Ann, who was born in Mississippi about 1878. She is listed with him on the 1910 census, married for the first time, and only married six months. Frank was listed as married for the second time. Next door was his younger brother Clarence. Frank Houston must have died before 1920, probably in Tate County. We do not find him nor Ann on a further census. All his children were living in homes of their siblings on the 1920 census. The known children were:

3. Elmer Franklin Houston was born on 14 April 1892 in Strayhorn, Tate County, Mississippi. He married about 1914, probably in Tate County, to Annie Austella "Stella" Aldridge, the daughter of Augustus W. and Rhoda A. Aldridge of Tate County. She was born on 16 July 1892 in Mississippi. Her sister Lillie Aldridge married Elmer's brother, John Humphreys Houston, about the same year. When he filed a draft registration in 1917 in Tate County, Elmer lived in Sarah in Tate County and claimed a wife, child, and an underage sister as dependents. The sister would be Lula, about ten at that time and living with him. In 1920, Elmer and Stella were still in Tate County, with two small daughters and his sister in their home. In neighboring Panola County in 1930, Elmer and Stella had a total of six children at the table. His sister Lula, now listed as Christine, was still in their home. Elmer Franklin Houston died on 15 January 1978 in Panola County. He was buried at Flag Lake Cemetery in Strayhorn, Tate County, Mississippi. Stella Aldridge Houston died five months later, on 9 July 1978 and was laid to rest next to him.

3. John Humphreys Houston was born on 25 August 1894 in Arkansas. There is some question as to his birth date, as on the 1900 census he was listed born August 1893, on his draft card he listed the date as 25 July 1894, and on his gravestone the date reads 25 August 1894. We have chosen to list the gravestone record until proven wrong. He married about 1914 to Lillie Viola Aldridge, another daughter of Augustus and Rhoda Aldridge, who was born on 29 November 1895 in Mississippi. Her elder sister Stella married to John's brother, Elmer Franklin Houston, in about the same year. On his draft card for World War I, John lived in Sarah in Tate County, farmed, and had a wife and one child. In 1920 in Tate County, John and Viola had a small son in the home, and John's brother Richard B. Houston lived with them. In 1930 in Tate County, John and Viola had just one son in their home.

3. Annie Blanche Houston was born on 9 February 1896 in Arkansas. About 1918, she married James Roderick McIver, the son of James Stevens and Martha E. McIver. He was born on 16 June 1896 in Strayhorn, Tate County, Mississippi. James had filled out a draft card in June 1918, apparently right before he married Annie Houston. The card, filed in Tunica County, Mississippi, stated that his nearest relative was Jennie McIver in Savage, Mississippi. In 1920, James and Annie McIver lived in Tate County. Frank Houston, Annie's younger brother, lived with them, age 18, and Jim McIver, a cousin, also was in their home as a seven year old. By 1930, James and Annie were parents of three children. They still had "extras" in the home, as his cousin and a niece both lived with them. We do not know a death date for James McIver. Annie Houston McIver died in August 1975 in Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi; no burial place is known.

3. Richard Buell "Dick" Houston, born 6 September 1898 in Mississippi, filed his draft card in Tate County, Mississippi. He was a farmer for C. H. Holloman in Sarah, Mississippi, and this would be his uncle. Mr. Holliman was the husband of Richard's aunt, Lillie Melinda Houston. In 1920, still single, Richard lived in the home of his brother John in Tate County. That year, he married Doxie Eudora Holliman, his cousin and the daughter of the man for whom he worked, Clarence Hildreath Holliman. In 1930, Richard and Doxie lived in Tate County with their four children. Doxie died on 23 March 1977 in Panola County, Mississippi and was buried at the Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. Richard died in Tate County in March 1984 and is at Bethesda as well.

3. Frank E. Houston was born on 15 January 1902 in Mississippi. He was with his sister Annie Houston McIver in Tate County in 1920. About 1925, he married Lois L. Spencer, born 19 February 1908 in Mississippi, daughter of Roy Manchester and Willie Spencer. In 1930, Frank and Lois had two small daughters and lived with her two brothers and a sister in their home. Frank Houston died 16 April 1989 in Panola County, Mississippi. Lois Spencer Houston passed away on 22 November 1994 in the same. No burial places are yet known.

3. Lula Christine Houston was born about 1908 in Oklahoma. In 1920 and in 1930 she lived with her brother Elmer Franklin Houston and family. We lose track of her after that; no marriage record is found.

2. William Henry Houston was born 8 February 1870 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi.  He married Mary Boling on 25 August 1899; apparently there were no children born to this couple.   He married Malissa Catherine Holliday on 10 July 1906 in Mississippi.  Malissa had been married first to John Pence in 1898 and they had a daughter, Mimma Pence.  William Henry and Malissa had three known children, R. T., a son who died in his birth month, July 1808, Vesta Belle, and Leroy Houston.  There was a third marriage to Martha Jane Shepperd on 21 November 1917 in Tate County, Mississippi.  They had one daughter, Fannie Connie Houston.  William Henry Houston died on 18 March 1956 in Luxora, Mississippi County, Arkansas.  

2. Ada Effie Houston was born 25 March 1874 and she married Charles Allen in Tate County, Mississippi on 9 August 1894. In the 1900 Tate County census, we  find  Charles Allen, who was born April of 1874 in Mississippi and he is married for five years to Effie. They have no children of their own, but three small Todd children are living with them, all listed as "wards". They are Leonie, Wayne, and Bertha, ages eight, six, and four. No relationship is known yet.  We do not know if Charles died or if they parted ways, but in 1908 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, Ada Effie Houston Allen married George Napoleon Provow.  George was born on 5 January 1864 in Henry County, Tennessee.  He was married a first time to Lucinda Miller, who died in 1907, and they had a daughter named Mattie Eula in 1891.  In 1910, George and Effie were listed in Henry County, Tennessee, married for two years, with his daughter Eula and also the two sons they had together. They lived in Henry County for the rest of their lives and were listed there on every succeeding census.  Ada Effie Provow died on 9 December 1950 in Henry County and was buried at the Spring Hill Cemetery there.  George passed away on 14 April 1959 in same and he was buried at Spring Hill.  They had three children together:

2. Lena B. Houston has various ages reported on the censuses. In 1880 she was listed as a child of two, but twenty years later, in 1900, she was listed as aged seventeen. That census reported her birthdate as September of 1882, but she was already two years old on the 1880 enumeration. Occasionally families would name a child for a deceased sibling and this is always possible here, but more likely it is census or reporting error. We will list her birth as September 1878. In 1910, Lena was listed as a single lady of thirty, living in the home of Clarence and Lillie Holliman, her sister's family, in Tate County, Mississippi.

2. Eula Estelle Houston was born on 6 February 1880 in Tate County, Mississippi. On 12 September 1898 in Tate County, she married James Levi Whitsell. He was born on 11 May 1876 in Tate County, the son of Samuel George Whitsell and his wife Rachel Elizabeth Jenkins. On the 1900 census, Eula and James Whitsell lived next door to his widowed mother in Tate County with a six month old daughter. In 1910, Jim and Eula Whitsell were still in Tate County with three children in the home. Next door was the family of Bud Ivy and wife Effie Whitsell. By 1920, they were still in Tate County and two children were added to their family. Eula's mother Eliza Houston, aged 73, was living in their home, as she was in 1930 as well, aged 84. Also living with the Whitsells in 1920 were Lillie Houston Holliman, Eula's widowed sister, along with her three children. James Levi Whitsell died 14 February 1945 and laid to rest at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County. Eula Estelle Houston Whitsell died on 7 August 1957 in Sarah, Tate County, and also lies at Truslow Cemetery. Their known children were:

3. Willie Beatrice Whitsell was born in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi on 31 October 1899. About 1920, she married Joe Moody Brucker, who was born 18 January 1902 in Panola County, Mississippi. He was the son of John Moody and Ada Florence Garrett Bruckner. In 1930, Joe and Willie lived in Panola County with their eight year old son, Kenneth Vernell. Willie Whitsell Bruckner died on 5 June 1973 in Panola County; Joe Bruckner passed away 15 March 1978 in Panola County. No burial places are yet known. We know of one child, Kenneth Bruckner, born 1 September 1921, died on 1 October 1969 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.

3. Sam George Whitsell was born 12 January 1902 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married Clemmie Dell Welch, a cousin, the daughter of Aurge G. and Lula Bell Byrd Welch, on 20 January 1943 in Mississippi. Clemmie was born on 5 January 1920 in Hot Springs County, Arkansas. They had four children. Clemmie Welch Whitsell died on 6 september 1968 in Tate County, Mississippi; Sam Whitsell died on 6 October 1969 in Grenada County, Mississippi. They are at rest at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi.

3. Grace Louise Whitsell, born on 18 January 1908 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, married Morris Coleman Bell about 1925. He was born about 1902 in Panola County, Mississippi, the son of Jordan and Lillie McCullough Bell, both Tennesseans who lived in Panola County by 1900. In 1920, Morris lived with his McCullough grandparents in Henry County, Tennessee. In 1930, Morris and Grace lived at Panola County with their two small daughters. They would eventually have five children. Morris died in August 1960 in Panola County and Grace Whitsell Bell died on 6 May 1982 in Greenwood, LeFlore County, Mississippi. No burial site is known for sure, but it may be Truslow Cemetery in Tate County, where their son is buried. They had children Margaret, Mary, an unknown daughter, an unknown son, and a son, Jerry Wayne Bell, born 24 May 1938 in Panola County and died 21 August 2005 in Greenwood, LeFlore County, Mississippi. He is buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Gertie Ruth Ann Whitsell was born on 22 March 1911 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. On 2 December 1928, she married Willard C. Jackson. He was born about 1905 in Mississippi. We do not know his parents yet. He may be the "W. C. Jackson", age 4, listed in Holmes County, Mississippi in 1910, research goes on. Ruth married a Davis later in her life, and she died on 9 August 1993 in Senatobia, Panola County, Mississippi. No burial place is yet known.

3. Mary Catherine Whitsell was born 10 July 1917 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married on 10 November 1934 to Robert Edgar Ivy. They were related, probably second cousins. He was born on 12 February 1914 in Sarah also, the son of Joseph Sephus Ivy and wife Sarah Elizabeth Welch, who was the daughter of Richard Welch and Margaret Mageline Houston (daughter of Seralda Beard). Robert enlisted on 29 October 1942 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi for service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was married. On the 1945 Florida State Census for Bay County, Robert E. and Mary Ivy, both born in Mississippi, were listed, with his occupation as army. Robert died on 13 April 1967 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee; Mary Catherine died on 14 April 1985 in Sardis, Panola County, Mississippi. They had two daughters, one who died at birth in 1942.

2. Lillie Melinda Houston was born May 1883 in Mississippi. She married Clarence Hildreath Holliman on 21 January 1899 in Panola County, Mississippi. He was the son of Peter Hildreath Holliman and wife Manerva Sullivan of Tate County, and he was born on 18 December 1876 in Mississippi. In 1900, Lillie and Clarence were listed in their own household in Tate County with no children yet. In 1910, things had changed, as in their home they had five children, Clarence's brother, and Lillie's mother Eliza Houston as well as Dolph and Lena, Lillie's siblings. Lillie and Clarence would eventually raise eleven children. Clarence died at age 46 in 1923 and on the 1930 census Lillie is a widow with her three youngest children at home. She lived in the Tate County household of her sister Eula Houston Whitsell. Also in that home was their mother Eliza Houston. Lillie died in 1939, probably in Tate County, and she lies beside Clarence at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Dixie L. Holliman was born in Mississippi in November 1899. She married R. H. "Rube" Holcomb between 1920 and 1924. He was born on 10 May 1895 in Mississippi, no parents known yet. He filled out a draft card in Panola County, Mississippi, stating birth date and that he was born at Crenshaw, Panola County. In 1920, he was at Fort Benning, Georgia, serving as a private in the army. Dixie and Rube had a baby son named Thomas C. Holcomb in 1926 and unfortunately both mother and son died in 1926. They are both buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County. Rube remarried about 1929 and on the 1930 census, he is listed in Leflore County, Mississippi cotton farming with a wife, Bertha, and no children. Next door is his probable brother, George R. Holcomb.

3. Doxie Eudora Holliman was born in Mississippi on 26 June 1901. She married in 1920 to Richard Buell Houston, who was born 6 September 1898 in Tate or Panola County, Mississippi, the son of Frances Newton Houston and Lula Virginia Kimzey. Doxie and Richard were cousins. When he filled out a draft card, Richard, listing his middle name as "Dick", was single and age 20, living in Tate County. In 1920, he was still single and lived with his brother, John Humphreys Houston, in Tate County. Shortly after, he married Doxie and in 1930, they lived in their own home in Tate County with three children. Doxie Holliman Houston died on 23 March 1977 in Askew, Panola County, Mississippi and was laid to rest at Bethesda Cemetery in Tate County. Richard Buell Houston died in March 1984 and is buried at the same. Their eldest child, Richard Buell Houston, Jr, died in 1935 in Tate County and is buried at Truslow Cemetery there. Their daughter Helen J. Houston married in 1943 to Luther Sinquefield, Jr. and they lived at Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi, where she died in 1984 and Luther died in 2007, both buried at Bethesda Cemetery there. Doxie and Richard's youngest child, Heywood, married Linda Mae Canady and he died in 2004 in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

3. John Henry Holliman was born on 26 June 1905 in Mississippi. He married in 1927 to Nettie Mae Boling, who was born 7 October 1909 in Mississippi, the daughter of Edgar/Edward Lee Boling and wife Elsie Elizabeth Lee Whitsell. In 1930, John and Nettie Holliman were listed in Tunica County, Mississippi, married three years. Nettie died in Mississippi on 16 July 1982 abd was buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County. John died on 20 October 1985 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi and also rests at Truslow. No children are known.

3. Thelma M. Holliman was born about 1906 in Mississippi.

3. Clarence Dewitt Holliman was born on 27 December 1907 in Mississippi. He married about 1927, to Pearl P. Vancleave, born 15 March 1912 in Paris, Henry County, Tennessee, the daughter of Harvey and Lottie Beavers Vancleave. In 1930, Pearl and C. D. Holliman lived in Tate County, Mississippi, where he was driving a logging truck. Clarence died on 25 April 1974 in Mississippi. Pearl passed away on 17 September 2002 in Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi. Her obituary in The Panolian says that she died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. They are both buried at Longtown Cemetery in Panola County. They had three children, Diane, Naomi, and Clarence.

3. J. P. Holliman, born on the Fourth of July 1912 in Mississippi, and we do not know what his full name could be, as all the found records list "J. P." as his name. One family says that his nickname was "Jake", so possibly he was a Jacob? On 28 October 1938 he married Olivia O. Spence, who was born in Mississippi in July 1922, the daughter of Roy Manchester and Willie Gertrude Spencer. Olivia's elder sister Lois married Frank E. Houston, another descendant of Joseph and Seralda Houston. J. P. Holliman was buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County after he died on 28 August 1999.

3. Bennie Leon Holliman was born on 23 December 1913 in Mississippi. He died in 1923 and is buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Eugenia Holliman, listed as a daughter born about 1917 in Mississippi, appears on the 1920 census with her parents. In 1930, she does not appear with her widowed mother, so perhaps she had died before that. No further records have been found.

3. Travis R. Holliman was born in 1918 in Mississippi and died in 1939. He is buried at Truslow Cemetery.

3. Louise Holliman, born about 1921 in Mississippi, appears on the 1930 census with her widowed mother. No further records have been found.

3. Clarence Hildreath Holliman, Jr. was born 7 November 1923 in Mississippi.

2. Clarence Edgar Houston, born 30 October 1886 in Tate County, Mississippi, married Ida Tyler on 24 June 1906 in Mississippi. Ida was born 28 September 1888 in Mississippi. Her father was Frank Tyler, mother Anna Rebecca Mote. In 1910, Clarence and Ida lived next door to his elder brother Frank Houston in Tate County and they were parents of two small girls. On his 1917 draft card, Clarence stated that he was a farmer employed by Arthur Spencer of Sarah, Tate County. He had a wife and four children by that time. Arthur Spencer was the brother of Lois Spencer, who was the wife of Frank E. Houston, son of Francis Newton "Frank" Houston. In 1920 they were still in Tate County, with five children. We cannot yet find them in the 1930 census records. Clarence Houston died on 17 November 1954. He is buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. Ida Tyler Houston died on 15 November 1971 and is buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery, as well.

3. Lillian May Houston, born 18 April 1907 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, married Ernest Augusta Holcomb about the year 1925. He was born 22 January 1901 in Panola County, Mississippi, the son of Edward Augusta and Fannie Sue Randolph Holcomb. In 1930, Ernest and Lillian lived in Panola County with their two young sons. Ernest died 4 May 1976 in Crenshaw, Panola County. He was buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. Lillian Houston Holcomb died 8 August 1985 in Mississippi and is buried with Ernest at the LDS cemetery in Tate County. We know of two sons, Ernest Jr and Clarence.

3. Stella Beatrice Houston was born on 12 September 1908 in Tate County, Mississippi. In 1924 she married William Henry Long, the son of James Thomas and Ora Lee Yelvington Long. He was born on 12 March 1902 in Sarah, Tate County. William died at the age of 23 on 9 September 1925 in Tate County. Stella was expecting a child and their daughter Willie Beatrice Long was born in February of 1926. Stella remarried on 22 July 1928 to Lee Andrew Dorris, the son of Jack Eldridge and Effie Ada Whitsell Dorris. Lee was born 14 December 1898 in Mississippi. On the 1930 census, Stella and Lee lived in Panola County, Mississippi with her daughter Willie Long and their baby son Jack Milton Dorris. They eventually lived in nearby Memphis, Tennessee. Lee retired from the Memphis and Shelby County Parks Commission. He died on 6 January 1975 in Memphis. Stella lived in Mississippi later in her life and she died on 3 August 1996 in Senatobia, Panola County, Mississippi. They are both buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. They had five children, Jack Milton, Franklin Deland, Bernice Berry who married Morris Bell, James, and Larry.

3. Edna Ruth Houston was born 31 March 1930 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. In 1952, she met Aaron Saul Brown, a BYU student who was conducting student tours of Mexico City. He offered to pay her way on the trip and the flight home to Memphis, Tennessee. Aaron's grandfather was one of the Mormon Legion and was the founder of Ogden, Utah. Jessie and Aaron were married on 7 June 1954 at the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. They lived in New York City while he was in school there. Their daughter Bonnie was born in New York, and soon Jessie and Aaron headed for Senatobia, Mississippi to show her off to her relatives there. They then drove to El Paso to do the same with his relatives. They went to Chicago, Illinois, where he was a linen buyer for Marshall Field and Company. Jessie taught elementary school in Park Ridge, Illinois. A son was born to them in 1959. After retiring from Marshall Field, the Browns moved to Arizona, where they were very active in the Mormon Church there. Jessie Whitsell Brown died on 1 October 1991 in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. She was taken home to Mississippi and laid to rest at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Sarah, Tate County, amongst her many family members. Aaron Saul Brown remarried, and he passed away on 31 May 2011 in Maricopa County and was buried there. Their son James Edward Brown, who worked in theatre in Chicago, died the year before in Illinois; their daughter Bonnie, a school principal, married and lives in Idaho. 3. Blanche Louise Houston was born 14 September 1914 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married a J. T. Mannon and they had at least two children. She was a retired nurse's aid at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Blanche died on 1 November 1989 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi and was buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County. No further information is yet known.

3. J. B. Houston, a son, was born in 1916 in Tate County, Mississippi. He died as a baby, in 1917. It is possible that his name was John B. Houston, as Clarence's father's name was John.

3. Thelma Floice Houston was born on 17 March 1918, one of a pair of twin daughters. She married Andrew Ott, Jr. on 4 January 1941, place unknown. He was born 6 May 1921 in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Andrew Ott Sr and wife Lucille Barker. Thelma and Andrew Ott had a daughter, Bobbye Carolyn, who grew up and married a Forster. Thelma married a second husband on 12 July 1956 in Hernando, Desoto County, Mississippi. He was Charles Thomas Johnson, born 28 August 1917 in Michigan. Charles died on 28 November 1984, place unknown. Thelma died 19 March 1989 in Senatobia, Mississippi and was laid to rest at Memory Hill Gardens in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.

3. Velma Lois Houston, twin to Thelma, was born 17 March 1918. She died on 5 October 1918 at the age of six months.

3. Anna Rebecca Houston was born on 13 October 1920 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married to Melvin Lee Kimbrell on 17 December 1938, the son of Garner Wesley and Flo Del Goodwin Kimbrell. Melvin was born on 13 December 1920 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Melvin died in January 1977 in Collinsville, Madison County, Illinois. Anna Rebecca Houston Kimbrell died on 29 January 1978 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Kimbrells had four known children, including Jon Thomas Kimbrell, who died in 2002 in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois.

3. Clarence Edward Houston, born on 22 September 1923 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, died on 26 January 1978 in Caseyville, St. Clair County, Illinois. He is buried back in Mississippi, at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Francis Marie Houston, born 7 March 1926 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, married twice, first to Claude Marvin Holliday, the son of Claude Marvin and Maudie Clair Moon. He was born on 1 October 1920 in Sarah, Tate County. They married on 1 December 1942; a son, Reedius Earl "Reed" Holliday was born on 8 December 1943 and died 30 November 2003 in Marks, Quitman County, Mississippi. Frances married second on 3 April 1947 to Lemuel Maxwell Johns. He was born on 31 March 1921 in Belen, Quitman County, Mississippi to David Maxwell Johns and his wife Mary Lula Johnson. Lemuel and Frances had at least six children. He died on 25 March 1991 in Marks and was buried at Forrest Memorial Park, Batesville, Panola County, Mississippi. Frances died 5 October 2000 and was also laid to rest at Forrest Memorial.

2. Joseph Dolphus "Joe" Houston was born 25 February 1888, according to family. In 1910 he lived with his sister Lillie Holliman, his mother and sister. No further record can be found, but a gravestone at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County has his name as Joe D. Houston and date of death 1 December 1916. Some sources report that he married a Martha McIver; if so, the marriage would have been after the 1910 census.

2. Donnie Houston, called "Murtle D. Houston" on the 1920 census, was born 9 June 1892 in Tate County, Mississippi. About 1908, she married Bathie Homer Patrick, who was born 29 June 1890 in Mississippi. His father was Joseph A. Patrick, who was born in Spalding County, Georgia, and his mother was Mary Lucienda May of Knox County, Tennessee. On the 1920 and the 1930 censuses, Donnie and Homer Patrick lived in Tate County. He died on 18 December 1975 in Mississippi and is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Tate County. Donnie died 20 May 1991 in Mississippi and is next to him at Magnolia Cemetery. They had five children.

3. Clara E. Patrick was born in 1910 in Tate County, Mississippi. About 1927 she married James Clay O'Neal, son of Mack and Lucy Campbell O'Neal. He was born about 1907 in Mississippi. On the 1930 census, they were listed in Tate County with two young sons. Clara is said to have died in 1950 but we find no records yet. No dates are known for James. They had sons Howard E. who died 1993 in Tunica County, Mississippi and Carl Willie, who died in 1986 in Panola County, Mississippi. Both of them were buried at Surrett's Cemetery in Tate County. There were six other O'Neal children.

3. Virginia W. Patrick was born 13 January 1914 in Georgia or Mississippi. She married Clarence Murphy "Mert" Jones on 13 February 1932 in Tate County, Mississippi. She died on 16 January 2000; in her obituary it was stated that she died at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven, Mississippi, that she was a homemaker and member of the Baptist Church. Murphy Jones died on 31 July 2003. He was 96 and a retired mechanic for Seago Tractor. He had 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. No burial place is yet known. They had four children, including sons Minor and Louis D., who died in 2007 in Desoto County and was buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi, and two daughters, Pat and Frieda.

3. Reba C. Patrick was born about 5 August 1916 in Tate County, Mississippi. She married Ralph "Jack" Still. He was born 29 April 1917 in Mississippi. The son of Curtis Still and wife Florence. Jack died on 31 August 1996 in Marrero, Louisiana. Reba died on 23 of September 1998 in Marrero, Louisiana. They are both buried at Westlawn Cemetary. They had eight children.

3. Sidney Loda Patrick was born 11 February 1922 in Tate County, Mississippi. She married John Thomas Lentz on 28 August 1937 in Tate County. He was born 14 January 1914 in Mississippi, the son of Morgan Mathews Lentz and wife Minnie Thomas. John died 28 October 1997 in Tate County and was buried at Surette Cemetery there. Sidney, who died 22 September 2005, was also buried at Surette. They had thirteen children, including Thomas Ray, who died in 2009 in Tate County.

3. Homer L. Patrick was born on 1 May 1925 in Tate County, Mississippi. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He married on 3 February 1944 to Jeanie, last name unknown to us. Homer is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Tate County; he died on 13 January 2000 in Tate County.

3. Helen Patrick was born about 1927 in Tate County. She married an unknown Barmer.

1. Jesse T. Houston was born about 1849 in Mississippi. He was a baby on the 1850 census and ten years old in 1860. No further records can be found, so it is possible that he died before 1860.

1. Margaret Mageline "Maggie" Houston, born in January 1850 in Batesville, Panola County, Mississippi, married Richard Henry Welch in 1874 in Mississippi. Richard was born in March 1850, the fourth of fourteen children born to John and Anna Jane Stuckey Welch. Richard was born in Attala County, but the family was in Vaiden, Carroll County, Mississippi by the 1870 census, when he was twenty years old. Once married, he and Margaret set up housekeeping in Tate County and they are found on the 1880 census there with four children under four years old. There was a period of time in the late 1880s when Maggie and Richard saw the birth of five children who all died before they were much past the age of two. Twenty years later in 1900, they were still in Tate County, and four of their twelve children were living at home. On the 1910 census, Richard was listed in the home of his married son John Welch in Traskwood, Saline County, Arkansas, where he was listed as a widower. This was not true, however, as Maggie Welch was living in the home of her son A. G. "Erge" Welch in Tate County, where he was newly married. Margaret Houston Welch died in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi in November 1917. We cannot find a trace of Richard Welch on the 1920 census, but he died on 9 February 1925 in El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas; the Arkansas Death Index lists him as "R. H. Welch". The twelve children and the descendants of Richard and Maggie Welch:

2. Mary J. Welch was born in 1875, possibly in Vaiden, Carroll County, Mississippi. She is reported to have married a William Butler and died in 1920, but no death or marriage record has been found for Mary and we cannot prove this information.

2. Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Welch was born 20 January 1877 in Vaiden, Carroll County, Mississippi. On 12 August 1894 she became the bride of Joseph Sephus Ivy in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He was born 2 August 1868 in Senatobia in Tate County and was the son of Enoch Jefferson Ivy, who was born in 1822 in Marion, South Carolina and wife Elizabeth McBride, born 1831 in Marshall County, Mississippi. Joseph and Sally Ivy lived in Tate County all their married lives and raised a large family there. Joseph died there on 25 January 1948; Sarah Elizabeth Welch Ivy died 10 October 1957, also in Tate County. They are buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County. They had thirteen children.

3. James Walter "Jim" Ivy, born 24 July 1895 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, filled out his draft card for World War I in Tate County. He was single and worked for Dave Whitsell in Tate County. On 4 April 1919, he married Dorothy Pauline Mosby in Tate County. She was born 3 November 1898 in Perry, County, Arkansas, the youngest child of Philip Woodson Mosby and his wife Anna Solomon, both from Desoto County, Mississippi, next to Tate County.They had moved to Arkansas for a time. By 1900, Pauline's father died and the family moved back to Tate County. On the 1920 census, Pauline and James lived in Tate County next to Daniel H. Ivy and wife. By 1930, still listed in Tate County, they lived next door to his father Joseph S. Ivy and they had five of their eventual twelve children. A pair of twin girls were born in 1928 but died as infants. James Walter Ivy died on 29 May 1953 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Pauline died many years later, in Memphis, on 24 July 1977. No burial place is known. Their children that we know of are Sadie LaDerma who married Virgil McDowell, Victor Mosby, James Walter Jr, Joyce Lanell, Pauline and Maurine, twins who died as infants, Joseph Woodson, Phillip Ray, Thomas Earl, and three living.

3. Pattie Elizabeth Ivy was born in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi on 8 March 1897 and died on 18 August 1900.

3. John Wallace Ivy was born 28 December 1898 in Sarah, Tate County. John filed a draft card at age 19, living at Sarah, Mississippi. He stated he was a student at the Agricultural School at Senatobia in Tate County and lived with his father, J. S. Ivy there. He served his country in World War I and his grave is marked with his service in the United States Navy. John married Doris Irene Maynard, who was born in Memphis, on 7 December 1926, either in Mississippi or Memphis. She was born on 22 June 1910, the daughter of Connie Priestley "Bud" Maynard and Lulu Belle Heidelberg. John and Doris are not found on the 1930 census, but in 1945 they were listed on the Florida State Census living in Escambia County. He was a mechanic and they had a twelve year old son, John Jr. John Wallace Ivy died on 5 February 1974 in Memphis; Doris Maynard Ivy died 3 July 1979 in Memphis. They are buried together at the Memphis National Cemetery. Their son, John Jr, died in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1989.

3. Hattie Luella Ivy was born 22 November 1900 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi and died on 16 March 1901 at the age of three months. She is buried at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Homer Lee Ivy was born on 6 February 1902 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He served in the United States Navy. When he came home from his tour of duty, he married his cousin, Clara Delsia Ivy, on 9 February 1929 at Sarah. Clara was born on 19 March 1911 at Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi. Her parents were Enoch Jefferson and Effie Ada Whitsell Ivy. She was the only daughter, and had two brothers and two half brothers. Since they were cousins, their parents were against the idea of marriage, so the young couple eloped. According to his daughter Bernice's account, neither family was happy with this turn of events and so the young couple started their marriage alone. They had seven dollars and Homer spent it on medicine for Clara the second day of marriage. They spent a few nights with his sister Viola Holliday, then they made an agreement to sharecrop with Mr. Fuller of Crenshaw, Mississippi. They bought an iron bed, a table and two chairs, wood cookstove, some dishes, and two brooms on credit, and started life together. Their families eventually took them back into the fold. Homer and Clara lived in homes in Panola, Tate, and Tunica Counties; they bought their first home in the Little Texas Community in Tunica County in 1955. They sharecropped and he worked as a carpenter, a night watchman, and worked some in the rice fields of northern Mississippi. During the early years of their marriage, the Depression years, Homer worked for the WPA for a time. He was an elder of the Latter Day Saints church in the Sarah Ward, and when he died, he was superintendent of the Sunday School there. Homer Ivy died on 12 March 1960 of a heart attack in Tunica, Tunica County, Mississippi. He is buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County. Clara married again, to Francis Morehead Geyer, and they lived in Missouri. She died on 22 December 1979 at Mountain View, Howell County, Missouri and was buried back in Tate County at Latter Day Saints Cemetery. Joseph and Clara had eight Ivy children.

3. Viola May Ivy, born on 1 May 1904 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, married Charles Alonzo Holliday on 19 November 1927. In 1930 they lived in Panola County, Mississippi, two doors from other Ivy families. They had five children. Viola Ivy Holliday died on 19 November 1968 and was buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County. Charles remarried and he died on 18 July 1989 in Senatobia, Panola County, Mississippi. The five children included Charles, Jr, who died at birth, Allen Heber, and Paul Coleman, who died at birth.

3. Leona Hazel Ivy was born 16 May 1906 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married on 12 August 1934 in Sarah to Ernest Kay Vardeman Berry. He was born in Clay County, Mississippi on 20 October 1909, the son of George William and Annie Sophia Arndt Berry. Ernest and Leona had seven children. She died on 25 September 1988 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Ernest died 1 April 1994, also in Memphis. They are both at rest at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi.

3. Joseph Henry Ivy was born 1 November 1910 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married Marion Alline Frazier, the daughter of Joshua Leroy and Georgia Annie Garrett, on 16 December 1927 in Sardis, Panola County, Mississippi. they were very young when they married. They had five children. They parted ways and Joseph Ivy remarried on 14 November 1955 to Frances Lorraine Teague. She was born 18 September 1911 in Alabama or Tennessee. Joseph Henry Ivy died on 12 November 1971 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, last residence address was West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas. Frances died January of 1987 in West Memphis or Memphis. They are both buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery back in Tate County. Marion died on 19 September 2000 in Memphis and is also buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery. Two of the children of Joseph and Marion were Joseph Leroy, who died on 17 December 1974, and Johnie Lucretia, who married Kenneth Larell Berry and then Enoch Jefferson Ivy, and who died 19 May 1994 in Memphis.

3. Robert Edgar Ivy was born 12 February 1914 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married on 19 November 1934 to Mary Catherine Whitsell. She was born 10 July 1917 in Sarah, the daughter of James Levi Whitsell and Eula Estelle Houston. Robert and Mary Catherine were related, probably as second cousins. Robert and Mary seem to be listed on the 1945 Florida State Census in Bay County, where he was in the Army Air Corps. There is a Robert E. Ivy who enlisted on 29 October 1942 in the Air Corps. Robert died on 13 April 1967 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Mary Catherine died 14 April 1985 in Sardis, Panola County, Mississippi. They had a daughter, Mary Jean, who died as an infant in 1942, and another daughter.

3. Isaac Heber Ivy was born on 22 January 1916 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married on 18 April 1936 in Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi to Virginia Inez Holliday. She was born 24 May 1920 in Sarah. At some point they moved west, where she died on 31 March 1996 in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas and he passed away on 11 July 1998 in Superior, Pinal County, Arizona. They had at least three children, including Frances Virginia who married James Filyaw and a Burks and who died in 1999 in Hardeman County, Tennessee; and Archie Gene, who died in 1998 in Tate County, Mississippi.

3. Tracy Otis Ivy was born on 11 September 1918 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married on 9 February 1946 to Annis Katherine Jordan. Tracy and Annis had seven children. He died on 26 June 1999 in Quinlan, Hunt County, Texas and was buried back home in Tate County at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery.

2. Daniel Henry Welch was born 6 October 1878 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. On 29 December 1901 in Tate County, he married Virginia Leona "Virgie" Pratt. She was born in September 1883 in Mississippi, the daughter of Earle and Virginia Pratt of Tate County. In 1910, listed as Henry and Vergie Welch in Tate County, Daniel Henry and Virginia had two children. In 1920 Tate County, they had four children and lived next door to James Ivy, his nephew, and his wife Pauline. We cannot yet find Daniel Henry and Virginia on the 1930 census. At some point, they may have moved to West Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. Virgie Pratt Welch died there on 2 March 1951. She is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Daniel died on 27 June 1958 and his grave is also at Memorial Park in Memphis. They had four children:

3. Essie Eva Welch was born on New Year's Day of 1903 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married Eric Earl Terry in 1920. He was born on 31 December 1899 in Tate County, the son of John Arthur Terry and wife Ida Carroll Davis. In 1930, Eva and Earl Terry were living at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee with a young son, Earl Jr. Earl Sr. worked as a serviceman for a Memphis business. Their son, Lt. Eric Terry Jr. and another Marine were killed by Japanese gunfire in World War II in the Pacific. They were flying a PBJ, both members of Marine Bombing Squadron 433. Young Eric's parents were listed in Elaine, Phillips County, Arkansas. Eric Sr. died on 27 January 1985, last residence was West Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.He is at rest at Memphis Memorial Park in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Eva died on 8 November 1991, same last residence and burial place.

3. Brutonia Welch was born on 17 November 1911 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She died on 20 March 1991 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee and was buried at Memphis Memorial Park.

3. Edna Earl Welch, born on 5 September 1912 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi, died 20 June 1969 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. She is also buried at Memphis Memorial Park.

3. Unis Luther Welch was born in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi on 19 March 1914. He died 8 August 1951 in Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee and is buried at Memorial Park in Memphis.

2. C. T. Welch, a son, was born in January 1880 in Tate County, Mississippi. He died as a child, about 1885.

2. John Wallace "Flem" Welch was born in Tate County, Mississippi on 4 March 1882. He married Ida Elizabeth Long of Tate County on 14 December 1902. Ida was the daughter of the late J. Henry Long and his wife Martha Ozella Whitsell of Tate County. The newly married couple lived in Mississippi for a short time, then they lived in Garvin County, Oklahoma by 1908 when a child was born there. In 1910, they were in Traskwood, Saline County, Arkansas for the census. They had two of three children living. John's father Richard Henry Welch was enumerated in their home, listed as a widower, but his wife Maggie was still living back in Mississippi. By 1914, John and Ida were back in Tate County, Mississippi and John died there at the young age of 37 on 8 May 1919. Ida was listed as a widow on the 1920 census in Tate County with six children at home, the youngest two years old. By 1930, she had moved her family to Tunica, Tunica County, Mississippi, where she lived two homes away from her brother in law, A. G. Welch and his family. Her son Joe was listed as the head of her household. Ida died on 24 November 1975, last residence listed was Askew, Panola County, Mississippi. She is buried at Truslow Cemetery with John Welch. Their children were:

3. Thelma Flossie Welch was born 14 January 1904 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married on 14 March 1920 in Tate County to Luther Dallas Holliday. He was born 4 November 1897in Mississippi, the son of Charles Allen and Dosha Edna Hudspeth Holliday. The brother of Dallas Holliday was Charlie Alonzo Holliday, who married Viola May Ivy. In 1930 Thelma and Dallas lived at Tunica, Tunica County, Mississippi with three young children. Dallas died on 12 June 1976 in Tate County, Mississippi. Thelma passed away 29 December 1981 in Senatobia in Tate County. They are at rest at Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. Their children: John Allen, Murlin Robert "Bob, Leon Lorenzo, Ferrell, Tensie who married a McDaniel, and Charles Glen.

3. California Welch was born on 13 January 1906 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She died on 6 June 1908 in Tate County.

3. Joe Raymond Welch was born 9 April 1908 in Garvin, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. He was the head of household for his mother and siblings in 1930 in Tunica County, Mississippi, where they lived two homes away from A. G. Welch, Joe's uncle. Joe married after 1930 to Uddy Gertrude Berry. She was born 9 September 1912 in Houlka, Chickasaw County, Mississippi to Abril Marshall Berry and Narcis Gilbert Dennis. Her younger sister Ruby Inez Berry would marry Dallas Welch, Joe's younger brother, in 1930. Did they have a double wedding? Joe Welch died on 10 December 1976 in Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi. Gertrude Berry Welch died 16 January 1982 in the same. They are both buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. They had at least nine children, including Joel Maynard, who passed away in 1995 and is also at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery.

3. Dallas Ruby Welch was born 11 May 1910 in Traskwood, Saline County, Arkansas. On 24 August 1930, he married Ruby Inez Berry, younger sister of Uddy Gertrude, see above. They had eleven children. Dallas died 9 July 1993 in Crenshaw, Panola County, Mississippi; Ruby died 27 September 1999 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. They are at rest at Truslow Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi.

3. Wrennie Elzy Welch was born 19 March 1913 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She died in April 1979 in Askew, Panola County, Mississippi.

3. Mary Pauline Welch was born 9 October 1915 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married Harold Lavern Holliday on 9 September 1939. He was born on 24 September 1916 in Tate County, the son of Claude Marvin Holliday and Maudie Clair Moon. He died on 31 March 1977. Mary Pauline Holliday died 4 February 2003, both in Mississippi. They had at least three children, Harold Jr. who died in 2000, Billy Wayne who died in 2007, and a daughter, Martha.

3. Marvin Henry Welch was born on 5 October 1917 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. He married Lottie, last name unknown. Marvin died on 6 June 1969 in Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi and he is buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County. They had two daughters who died as infants, Betty Jean and Susan, both buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery as well. Other children are not known.

2. A. G. Welch was born on the 4th of July, 1885 in Tate County, Mississippi. His name may have been "Aurge" G. Welch but we do not know for sure. In censuses he seems to have been called "Urge" or "Erge". There is one descendant who reports that his middle name was "Eurge". About 1909 he married Ida Bell Ford. She was born in Mississippi about the year 1891. They appear as a newly married couple on the 1910 Tate County census, listed as Erge and Ida Welch, with his mother listed in their home as a widow. We know that her husband was still alive, however, living with their son John in Traskwood, Saline County, Arkansas--and he was listed as a widower! By 1920, A. G. Welch was himself listed in Arkansas, in Hot Springs County. Ida Ford Welch died between 1911 and 1914, possibly in childbirth with their only child, A. G. Welch, Jr., and he had a different wife, Lula Bell Byrd, who was born in March 1889 in Purdie, Arkansas. They married in March 1914. In 1920, they had two sons, in addition to A. G., Jr. Lula died on 24 February 1930, before the census was taken. On that census, A. G. Welch is found back in Mississippi, in Tunica County, listed as a widower with four children. He lived just two homes away from his brother John Wallace Welch and family. Also listed in Tunica County this year was Ruth Westbrook Gentry, living in the home of her widowed mother. Ruth and A. G. would marry in 1933 and they would have three more Welch children. A. G. Welch died in Mississippi on 21 June 1946. He is buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi. We are not sure where any of his three wives are buried. We do know that Ruth Westbrook Welch died in Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky on 20 April 1997. At least two of her three sons made homes in Kentucky. The child of his first marriage to Ida Ford was:

3. Aurge G. Welch Jr., born on 25 March 1911 in Tate County, Mississippi, married Effie Pearl Castleberry on Christmas Day, 1934 in Tate County, Mississippi. She was born on 16 January 1914 in Upshur County, Texas, and was the daughter of Robert Jones and Frances Cordelia Mathews Castleberry of Texas. During World War II, Aurge Welch served as a private in the United States Army.

They seem to have made their home in Texas, as both of them died in that state. Aurge died on 8 April 1980 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas and Effie died on 14 July 1989 in Upshur County, Texas. Both of them are buried in Upshur County at Kelsey Cemetery. We do not know details of children.

No marriage is known. He died on 9 January 1975 in Sarah, Panola County, Mississippi and is buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Clemmie Dell Welch was born on 5 January 1920 in Arkansas. She married a cousin, Sam George Whitsell, the son of James Levi and Eula Estelle Houston. He was born on 12 January 1902 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. They had at least four children. Clemmie Welch Whitsell died on 6 September 1968 in Tate County. Sam died 6 October 1969 in Grenada County, Mississippi. They are buried at the Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County.

3. Otis Edgar Welch was born 14 November 1918 in Arkansas. He died on 28 January 1982 in Holcomb, Grenada County, Mississippi. No marriage of children are known. He is buried at Latter Day Saints Cemetery in Tate County.

2. Mattie Leona Welch was born on 1 July 1892 in Tate County, Mississippi. About 1908-1910 she married Joseph M. Tatom. Joseph was born in November 1874 and he was older by eighteen years and had been married before. He was reportedly born in Bearden, Lafayette County, Tennessee. From the birth places of all their children, Joseph and Mattie lived in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi in 1911, and then the next child was born in Arkansas. They were back in Mississippi for the birth of a third child, and then they moved to Texas right after the 1920 census, on which they were in Tate County. In this 1920 listing, they lived next to Ida Welch, the widow of Mattie's brother John Wallace Welch. In 1930, the Tatoms were listed in Henderson County, Texas, with seven children at home. Joseph died the next year, 1931, leaving Mattie with a large family to raise. She died in April 1934, probably in Texas. They had children:

3. Della Lucilla Tatom was born 3 February 1909 in Oklahoma. It is possible that she was a child of the first marriage and not a daughter of Mattie Welch.

3. Mamie Lou Tatom was born 19 February 1911 in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi. She married William Albert Charlton. He was born 21 June 1901 in Colorado and died 25 May 1970 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. Mamie Tatom Charlton died 1 December 1990 in Oklahoma.

3. Jack R. Tatom was born in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi on 18 February 1913. He is said by family to have died about 1935, possibly in Texas.

3. Agnes M. Tatom was born 5 January 1915 in Sarah. She married Jim Roden Hammonds, who was born 10 July 1909. His parents were William Henry and Verdie Bell Morehead Hammonds. He died on 19 October 1981 in Grand Prairie, Dallas County, Texas. Agnes Tatom Hammonds died on 20 June 1997 in Navarro County, Texas. They had five living daughters and a son, Jim Edward, who died in Dallas County, Texas in 1993.

3. Howard E. Tatom was born in May 1916 in Sarah, Tate County in May 1916. He died in Texas in 1920.

3. James W. Tatom was born in Sarah, Tate County, Mississippi on 18 August 1918. James served in the Army during World War II. He married Doris E. Reynolds. James died on 16 September 1997 and is buried at King Cemetery in Henderson County, Texas, as is Doris Tatom, who died on 18 December 1997. They had five children Gary Donald, Lois Dianne, Karen Denise, James Dennis and Anthony Dwayne.

3. W. C. Tatom was born 1 June 1920 in Pecan Gap, Delta or Fannin County, Texas. He married Mamie Henson. W. C. worked 35 years at Vought Aircraft, then retired and enjoyed his farm. Mamie died on 14 November 2006 and is buried at King Cemetery, Henderson County, Texas. W. C. Tatom died on 14 November 2009 and lies at King Cemetery. A daughter was named Betty, a son was Allen Dale Tatom, who died in 1981 and is buried at King Cemetery as well. He served in the U. S. Navy during Vietnam. They had two other children Glen the oldest and Gale who was born between Betty and Dale.

3. William T. "Bill" Tatom was born on 31 March 1922 in Texas. He married Hellen Reynolds. William was a veteran of World War II. He died on 7 April 1995 and is buried at King Cemetery, Henderson County, Texas. They had four children Donna, Patty, Beverly and Hellen.

3. Alice Earline Tatom was born 4 April 1925 in Texas. She married Arthur Lynn Anderson in Texas. He was born in 1913 and died in 1988. Alice died 11 February 1993 in Kaufman County, Texas. They had two children Arthur and Ernest.

3. Gladys Girlene Tatom was born 4 April 1925 in Texas, a twin to Alice. She married on 28 December 1943 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas to Andrew Jackson Wiggins. He was born 30 July 1923, died 7 Mar 1976. Gladys died on 15 July 1992 in Irving, Dallas County, Texas. They share a double stone at Ridgeview Memorial Park, Allen, Collin County, Texas. On his stone is inscribed U. S. Army, World War II. They had four children Jackson, Wanda, Ruth, and Steve.

1. Joseph Henry Houston was born 9 February 1852 in Panola County, Mississippi. On 5 December 1884, he married Feriby Ann Myhand Garrett, the young widow of James Pinkney Garrett. She was born 27 July 1860, probably in Marshall County, Mississippi, and she was the daughter of William Morris Myhand and wife Martha Jane Hayley. In the 1900 census of Tate County, Mississippi, Henry and "Febber" Houston were listed with four children, one of whom was born in 1880 and therefore was a child of her first marriage. In 1910 the family was still in Tate County. By 1920, they were in Tate County with a married son and his family living with them. Joseph Henry Houston died shortly after the 1920 census, in July. Feriby Myhand Houston died September 1932. They are at rest at Harmony Cemetery in Tate County. They had three children together:

2. Mattie Houston, born January 1887, probably in Tate County, Mississippi. She was in her parents' home in 1900 for the census at age 13, but by 1910 she was out of the home. We know she was still living, for her parents report four of four living in 1910.

2. Samuel Edward Houston was born 21 January 1892 in Strayhorn, Tate County, Mississippi. He married Sadie Ell Hatton in Tate County on 8 February 1912. Sadie was born in April 1887 in Wilcox County, Alabama, the daughter of Charles Walton and Frances "Fanny" Wilkerson Hatton. When he completed his draft registration card in 1917, Samuel Houston lived at Senatobia in Tate County, farming, and had a wife and two children. In 1920, "Sammie" E. Houston lived with his parents, wife, three daughters, and his father in law Charlie W. Hatton, who was listed as a lodger with the family. By 1930, Samuel had moved his family to West Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. Sadie died on 12 February 1936 in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. Samuel Houston died in March 1976 in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. They had at least three children:

3. Blanche Louise Houston was born 14 September 1913 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. She died on 1 November 1989 in same, and she is buried at Truslow Cemetery in Sarah, Tate County.

3. Annie M. Houston was born about 1915 in Tate County, Mississippi.

3. Winnie Clare Houston was born 1 September 1917 in Tate County, Mississippi. She married Thomas Peel Veazey, Jr. From her obituary: "Winnie H. Veazey, 85, of Senatobia, died Wednesday January 15 [2003].. . in Holly Springs. Ms Veazey was a retired office manager for Sears and also for North Mississippi Savings and Loan, and a member of First Baptist Church of Senatobia....five grandchildren, six great grandchildren." Thomas Veazey was born 31 January 1913 in Senatobia and died in Rankin County, Mississippi on 13 October 1991. The Veazeys had two children, Elinor and Thomas III. Winnie Houston Veazey and Thomas are both at rest at Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi.

2. Ira Claude Houston was born 9 October 1894 in Strayhorn, Tate County, Mississippi. About 1915, he married Roxie, last name unknown, probably in Mississippi. She was born on 22 September 1898 in Mississippi and both her parents were born in Mississippi. Ira filled out a draft card in Tate County in 1917 and stated that he was a self employed farmer and married. In 1920, Ira and Roxie lived in Tate County with a small son and by 1930, they lived in neighboring Panola County with three sons. Ira died, we assume in Mississippi but find no record, on 13 July 1959 and he was buried at Friendship Cemetery in Como, Panola County, Mississippi. Roxie died on 23 August 1980 in Mississippi and was also buried at Friendship. They had three sons, every one of which served in World War II, and one who died in the war:

3. Lloyd B. Houston was born 31 October 1917 in Tate County, Mississippi. He enlisted for World War II on 7 October 1941 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, civilian employment auto mechanic. Lloyd served as a private in the Army. He died 25 July 1975 in Como, Panola County, Mississippi.

3. Henry L. Houston, born 9 August 1924 in Mississippi, enlisted for service in World War II on 28 June 1944 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and served as a private with the 383rd Infantry, 96th Division in the war. He died on 27 April 1945 of wounds received in the war. His unit was in the Pacific and on 1 April 1945 this force participated in the battle for Okinawa; there were many battles in this month as they pushed the enemy forces. He is buried at Friendship Cemetery in Panola County, Mississippi.

3. Ira Claude Houston, Jr. was born 4 June 1927. He served in the U. S. Navy during the War. He married Alene, last name unknown. Ira died 21 August 2001, last residence listed as West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas. He is buried at Friendship Cemetery in Panola County, Mississippi. Ira and Alene had a son, Charles Barron "Barry", who died in 1974 and is also at Friendship Cemetery.

1. James H. Houston was born 28 July 1853 in Panola County, Mississippi. In the late 1870s, he married and in 1880 is listed in Tate County, Mississippi with his wife Nicy/Nicey H. Burnett. She was born about 1853 in Georgia. James died 20 April 1897 in Mississippi and his grave is at Harmony Cemetery in Tate County. We do not yet know of children of this marriage.

1. David E. Houston was born in 1855 in Panola County, Mississippi. In 1880, he was 24 years old and lived with his mother. He is not yet found on a later census and no death record is found for him.

1. Barbara Ann Elizabeth Houston was born in November 1857 in Panola County, Mississippi. On 5 January 1879, Barbara married Richard Littleberry Johnson, the son of William and Penelope Ann Nelms Johnson, who lived in neighboring DeSoto County, Mississippi. Richard was born 16 September 1847 in Mississippi, one of seven sons and one daughter. He had been married previously to Mary Ann Moon and they had a daughter, Marietta Johnson, born about 1873. In 1880, Barbara and Richard Johnson lived in Tate County, Mississippi, close to her brother John Houston. They had a five month old son named Sam and Marietta was seven. At some time between November 1897 and the 1900 census count, they moved to South Fork, Clark County, Arkansas. On the 1900 census there, Richard was listed as Bery B. Johnson and Barbara as Lizzie Beth. Sadly, they had had eight children by then but lost four of them. It appears that they may have included Marietta in that count and therefore may have had seven children together. The Johnson family made Clark County their home for many years. In 1910, with Barbara listed as Bettie this time, only three of their "seven" children were still living. In 1920, Berry was 75 and Barbara E. was 61, and just the two of them were in the home. He died 21 June 1920 in Arkansas, just after the census. Barbara died 23 December 1925 and her last residence was Gurden, Clark County, Arkansas. Two children died before 1900, the other known children were:

2. Dester Lee Johnson was born on 1 March 1885 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. She married on 10 March 1907 in Clark County, Arkansas to John Edward Perrine. He was born 8 October 1878 in Carrollton, Green County, Illinois to Charles H. and Sarah Elizabeth Waggoner Perrine. By 1900, the Perrine family lived in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. John filled out his draft card in September 1918 in Clark County and provided Dester Lee Perrine as the name of his closest kin. In 1920, John and Dester were still in Clark County and had five children. In 1930, still in Clark County, they had seven children. Dester Lee Johnson Perrine died 18 March 1956 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. She was buried at Beirne Cemetery in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas, which is also called the Brown Cemetery. John Perrine passed away on 26 June 1967, Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas and is also at Beirne Cemetery. The children were:

3. Alta Lorraine Perrine was born on 9 March 1911 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. She married 3 June 1933 to Noble Robert "Bob" Wells in Beirne. Alta Wells died on 25 September 1979 in Arkadelphia, Clark County, Arkansas. Bob Wells died 7 April 1990 in Arkansas. They are both at rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Arkadelphia. No children are known.

3. Gladys Marie Perrine was born on 15 November 1913 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. She married Horace McElhannon in 1932. We do not know his birth or death date or parents. Gladys died on 10 January 1985 in Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas.

3. Elizabeth Leah Perrine was born 11 July 1916 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. She married on 4 February 1933 to Darrett Murray Wells. He was born on 1 November 1901 to William Francis Wells and Rose Lee Turpin Williams. Darrett was the brother of Noble Wells, who married Alta Perrine, Elizabeth's sister. This family moved from Arkansas to Texas at some point, and Darrett Wells died in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas on 16 March 1992. He is buried at Mt. Taber Cemetery, north of Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas. Elizabeth Leah Wells died 21 January 1998 in Lewisville, Denton County, Texas. She is also at Mt. Tabor. They had four known children, Betty Ruth who married Holland Harral, Carolyn Jane, Donald Murray, and one other.

3. Harlan Edward Perrine was born on 16 September 1919 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. He married 4 August 1946 in Clark County to Nancy Lee Thurman, born in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, the daughter of Ivan Millard and Reba Wise Thurman. Harlan died on 15 November 1986 in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas.

3. Elmer Eugene Perrine, born 6 September 1922 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. He enlisted for service on 5 November 1942 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Elmer married Myrtle L., last name unknown to us, on 1 February 1947. She was born on 31 January 1916, and died on 30 March 1981. He married second, Helen Adams Griffin. She had been married before and had children. According to his obituary, Elmer served from 1943 to 1947 in the United States Air Force and was a plant supervisor of Emsco Inc of Gurdon. He died on 18 August 2004 in Gurdon. He is buried at the Beirne Cemetery in Clark County under a double stone with his first wife, Myrtle L. Perrine.

2. Rosa Bell Johnson was born 29 January 1887 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. She married on 27 May 1904 in Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas to William Wade Cagle. William, born 21 November 1884 in Gurdon, was the son of William Dillard and Elizabeth "Bettie" Hill Cagle. In 1910, married six years, Rosie and Will lived at Missouri, Clark County, Arkansas with three children. On his draft card, he listed employment by Joe Clark in Gurdon and nearest relative was Rosa Bell Cagle. In 1920 they still lived in the same place with five sons at home. In 1930 they were listed at Buffalo, Craighead County, Arkansas with four sons. Rosa Cagle died on 18 May 1968 in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas. William Cagle died on 15 Apri 1971 in the same; they were both laid to rest at Danville Cemetery in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas.

3. Cecil Wade Cagle was born 8 March 1906 in Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas. He married Cordelia Mittie "Cordie" Johnson before 1931. They had seven children, Cecil Wayne, Alma Jean who married a Moneypenny, Karen Yvonne, William Earl and Delight and twin Dewayne, who all three died in infancy, and another child. Was Cecil married before the marriage to Cordelia Johnson? He died in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas on 16 April 1963. Cordelia Johnson Cagle died March 1983 in the same and both of them are at Danville Cemetery in Kilgore.

3. William Benjamin Cagle was born 7 January 1908 in Arkansas. He married in 1927 to Lona Alice Denson. She was born 23 August 1907 in Arkansas. They had at least six children, William Jr, Betty Lou who married a Harrod, Wanda who married a Griffin, Jean who married a Birt, Dale O'Neil "Doc", and Peggie Ann who married an Estrada. William Ben Cagle died 19 November 1967 in Smith County, Texas, last residence listed as Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas. Lona Alice Denson Cagle died on 13 February 2002, Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas. they are buried at Danville Cemetery in Gregg County, Texas.

3. Dorothy Cagle was born about 1909 in Clark County, Arkansas. She died in 1911 in the same.

3. Joe Jodie Cagle was born about 1911 in Arkansas. No records are found.

3. Richard Cagle was born about 1916 in Arkansas. He married Edna Felts on 27 May 1939 in Arkansas. She was born about 1918 in Arkansas.

3. John Hill Cagle was born 3 March 1918 in Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas. He married on 9 March 1937 to Ruby Mildred Francis, the daughter of Henry Edward and Johnnie Mclane Francis of Clark County. Ruby was born on 30 March 1919 in Beardstown, Lamar County, Texas. On 21 January 1944, John enlisted in the military for World War II service; he lived in Gregg County and enlisted in Tyler, Texas. They had at least five children, including John Henry, Ruby Dell who married an Ellis, Glenda Jernell who married a Foreman, and two other sons. John Hill Cagle died on 19 July 1992 in Kilgore, Clark County, Arkansas. Ruby died in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas on 20 July 2002. No burial places are known.

3. Bertle Wayne Cagle was born 1 September 1920 in Arkansas, probably in Clark County. There is a record of a B. W. Cagle, born 1920, residence in Clay County, Arkansas, enlisting for service at Little Rock, Arkansas on 22 February 1943. We have no other information except a death date of 13 April 1978 in Texas, burial was at Kilgore City Cemetery in Danville, Gregg County, Texas.

2. Joseph Elbert Johnson was born on 22 November 1888 in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi. He was still single when he filled out a draft card in Clark County in June 1917, stating that he farmed for J. A. Clark near Gurdon and that his mother and father were dependent on him. Between then and the census in 1920, he married Ethel Mae Taylor. She was born in Missouri on 3 November 1902, the daughter of John and Nellie Hackworth Taylor. In 1920 they had a baby daughter listed with them, and by 1930 they had three children and lived at South Fork, Clark County, Arkansas. When he filled out a draft card for World War II, Joseph still lived at Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas, employed by W. I. Wilkie at Smithton, and he listed Mrs. Julia Johnson of Gurdon his nearest relative. Joseph Elbert Johnson died in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas on 6 July 1958. Ethel Mae died in the same place on 13 September 1997. No burial places are known. Their children were:

3. Grace E. Johnson was born on 12 August 1919 in Clark County, Arkansas. She married on 6 March 1935 in Arkansas to John Raymond Baird. John was born 16 April 1913 in Delight, Pike County, Arkansas to William Thomas Baird and wife, Mary Ellen Flowers. The Bairds had eight children, Dee Bob, Martha Mae, Lenna Faye, Wendall, Mildred, John Edward, Paul, and Pauline. Grace died on 16 August 1962; John Raymond Baird passed away on 20 February 1972 in Gurdon, Clark County, Arkansas. He is buried at Center Ridge Cemetery at Gurdon. We do not know if Grace is buried there, as well.

3. Joseph Elbert Johnson Jr. was born on 15 October 1922 in Beirne, Clark County, Arkansas. He married Dorothy Mae Bogue in Longview, Texas on 5 July 1952 and they had two sons, Elbert Lee and Bobby Earl. Joseph died on 2 August 1979 in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas.

3. Gerald Dee Johnson was born 9 May 1929 in Clark County, Arkansas. He married a Garner and they had five children, Charlotte, Gerald, Jimmie Lee, Jerry, and Malcolm. Gerald died on 19 September 2007 in Texas.

3. Charles Landell Johnson married Bobbie, last name unknown and they had children Linda and Charles.

3. Robert Earl Johnson married Rose, last name unknown, and they had children Lisa Ann and Tammy.

1. Thomas J. Houston, born in 1859 in Panola County, Mississippi, died between 1860 and 1870. His name may have been Thomas Jefferson Houston.

1. Louisa F. Houston was born in April 1860 in Panola County. About 1877 she maried Walter B. Nash, who was born in Mississippi and appears to be the son of M. V. and Susan Nash. In 1880, married three years, Walter and Louisa lived with her mother Seralda Beard Houston in her Tate County home. They had a baby son, David. By 1900, the Nashes lived in Coahoma County, Mississippi, married 23 years with five children. In 1910 the family was listed in Lee County, Arkansas and they had two children still at home. Walter B. Nash died before his son Brooks registered for the draft in June 1917; Brooks claimed his widowed mother as a dependent. We have no death record yet for Louisa.

2. David H. Nash was born October 1878 in Mississippi. He appeared on the 1900 census in the home of his parents when he was 21. He certainly may be the David H. Nash listed in 1910 Concordia Parish, Louisiana as a single man of 31 who was foreman for the railroad. We find no further records of David. His middle name could be Houston.

2. Lula Nash was born February 1884 in Mississippi.

2. Brooks T. Nash, born 27 January 1888 in Senatobia, Panola County, Mississippi, filled out a draft card in June 1917 in Desha County, Arkansas, living in Helena. He stated that he was single with his mother dependent on him. Brooks was employed by the railroad, Perkins Brothers from Kelso, Arkansas. He died in Phillips County, Arkansas on 19 April 1918 in the Spanish influenza epidemic that swept the United States at that time.

2. Rena Mae Nash was born on 1 February 1895 in Arkansas. She married about 1917 to Marion Clyde Curry, son of Charles W. and Mallie Curry. Marion was born on 25 February 1890 in Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois. He was single when he filled out a draft card for World War I, living in West Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. At the time he was employed by Pekin Cooperage Company as a book keeper. He served as a corporal in the U. S. Army during the War, as is noted on a United States Veterans Gravesites record. Rena and Marion are not found in 1920, but in 1930 they were in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee with two daughters. Marion worked as an accountant there. When he filled out a World War II draft card, he lived in Baltimore, Maryland and worked for Roy Gallatt as an accountant. His nearest relative was listed as Allen E. Curry of Fairfield, Illinois. Rena Mae Nash Curry died on 5 February 1976 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Marion died 13 FEbruary 1982 in Montgomery County, Texas. No burial sites are known. They had two known daughters.
